Australia — Promoting Global Health

Melbourne — Over 1,700 representatives of 350 NGO from 70 differnt countries gathered in Melbourne, Australia, for the 63rd Annual UNO Department of Public Information/NGO Conference, August 30 – September 1, 2010. The meeting considered measures to prevent and to treat disease and illnesses as well as the development and safeguarding of society and healthy life-styles.

Italy — Migration: a challenge to society

Fr. Domenico Ricca, President of the SCS/CNOS Federation – Salesians in Social Work, issued a press release in response to the passage of a new Security law by the Italian Governement in early July, 2009. His statement, concurring with that of Bishop Agostino Marchetto, Secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants, pointed out that the Legislative Decree has both real and symbolic harm to vulnerable people.

Sri Lanka — The Church among displaced people and minefields

Thanks to pressure from the Diocese of Mannar, today the army is moving around 800 people in the north-west of the island, where large-scale army operations are under way against the Tamil rebels. In just a week, 4,000 displaced people poured into Murunkan, where they are taking shelter in a Salesian hostel, schools and host families.

Vietnam — Salesians Serve the Young

The Salesians began their work in Vietnam in 1952 establishing schools, shelters for streets kids, and providing assistance to migrants and minorities from rural areas throughout the country. Fr. Andrej Majcen, from Slovenia, and Father Giacomo, from Brazil, were the pioneers of the Salesian work in Vietnam. They established the first ministry in Hanoi.
