	Ecuador - University Access for Indigenous Youth Quito — On August 16, 2011 the Sacred Heart of Jesus Province, Ecuador (ECU) opened and blessed the Chillogallo University Indigenous Residence south of Quito. 	India — Fr. Baxla, S.D.B. Honored for his work among the Kurxar On October 14, 2006, at Ranchi, the Kurux Literary Society of India was established. Nearly 18 million Kurxar (Oraons) in east-central India speak the Kurux language, but only recently has there been a concerted effort to produce books and scholarly research in the language. This effort was given momentum due to the work of Dr. Narayan Oraon who invented Tolong Siki, the script for the Kurux language. Read more »

India — Solar Basket Fund

Rural women are interested in renewable energy technologies that improve their quality of life, reduce their workload, and/or provide them with opportunities to increase their income. This does not necessarily mean, however, that women have to work on energy project as technologies alone.

Ecuador – Shuar Youth Congress 2010

Tuutin-Entsa — The annual meeting of the Shuar young people gathered 320 youngsters from 22 parishes at the Salesian Center in Tuutin-Entsa and Taisha, May 28-30, 2010.

Salesian Youth Movement members, Fr. Juan Cárdenas, Delegate for Ministry with the Shuar, Fr. Ernesto Ankuash, and Sr. Gisella led the gatherings. Luis Tunki, a Shuar deacon, and the Etserin (the catechists from each of the parish centers participating in the meeting) also collaborated in the efforts of those days.

Ecuador — Fr. Baschirotto Awarded the Star of Italian Solidarity for Service to the Indigenous

On Saturday, February 27, 2010, Fr. Pio Baschirotto Capuzzo, S.D.B. received the Star of Italian Solidarity with the rank of Knight, from the hands of the Italian Ambassador to the Republic of Ecuador, Dr. Emanuele Pignatelli.

Chiang Mai Thailand’s Don Bosco Home Officially Opened

On June 21, 2009, Bishop Francis Xavier Vira Arpondratana, of Chiang Mai Diocese, retired Bishop Joseph Sangwan Surasarang of Chiang Mai, and 16 priests celebrated the Eucharist to mark the official opening of Don Bosco Home, Chiang Mai. Nearly 700 supporters of the Home participated in the opening Mass.

Lima, Peru — Fr. Luis Bolla, a Salesian missionary, has ministered to the Achuar people for 37 years and has become an expert on the culture and traditions of this tribe from the Amazon forest of Peru.

Berlin, Germany — On June 18th, 2009, Salesian Brother Alois Würste received the Cross of Merit from the German Government in recognition of his many years of service and humanitarian work among the Indigenous peoples of Brazil.

Wells of Hope — Life Giving water flows in Matto Grasso, Brazil

In a remote region in the west of Brazil, about 280 km from Cuiabá, in the State of Matto Grosso, one can find Sangradouro village, the home of nearly 2,000 Xavante and 400 Bororo Indians. Considered primitive by the developed world’s standards, these indigenous people preserve their way of life and culture with the assistance of the Salesians of Don Bosco.
